US Attorney General Authorizes Election Investigations | International

The head of the United States Department of Justice, Bill Barr, gave federal prosecutors across the country a blanket authorization on Monday to open investigations into voting irregularities, while President Donald Trump continues to claim that he lost the presidential election due to that there was fraud.

Barr, a loyal Trump squire, indicated in his letter to prosecutors across the country that this is not an indication that the Justice Department already has evidence of genuine cases in the election won by Democrat Joe Biden.

However, this frees officials from long-standing restrictions for this type of investigation, amid a sharp political debate in the United States in which Republicans denounced that there were illegal votes and illegalities in the count, without providing evidence.

“Since the voting in the current elections has concluded, I authorize them to investigate significant allegations of irregularities in the vote and in the counting process, before the certification of the elections in their jurisdictions,” Barr said.

The senior Trump-appointed official told prosecutors that “these investigations or reviews should be conducted when there are clear and apparently credible allegations of wrongdoing, which if proven true, could potentially impact the outcome of the federal election in a certain state ”.

Usually, fraud investigations are the responsibility of the states, which establish their rules.

The policy thus far of the Justice Department has been to hope that the vote counts are certified, the count is completed and that the elections have already concluded before getting involved.

Barr told prosecutors that this practice has never been such a strongly binding rule and that if they see anything that could reverse the results of the November 3 election, they should investigate.

Trump, in an unprecedented position for a US president, continues to fail to recognize the triumph of his rival, insisting on accusations of fraud. But although his team has gone to court, there has been no evidence of significant wrongdoing.

The president’s team is fighting to challenge the results and reverse them in several key states where Biden won by a narrow margin: Pennsylvania, Nevada, Georgia and Arizona.

These votes gave the Democrat a majority in the Electoral College enough to win the US presidential election.
