By way of without precedents, the Ministry of Finance offered to readjust the minimum wage to zero pesos in the current economic and labor crisis due to the coronavirus.
After the Government and the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) concluded the negotiations to fix a figure for the increase in salaries without agreement, the Treasury portfolio presented its proposal for a readjustment of 0 percent.
A few hours after the deadline to enter the readjustment project, it was proposed to maintain the current minimum wage at 320,500 pesos, “given the variation of 0 percent of the CPI between March 2020 and today”.
The minister Ignacio Briones explained that the proposed readjustment “is a reflection of the economic and labor crisis that the country is going through, as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The Executive had rejected the proposal of the leaders to increase the minimum salary from 320,500 to 400,000 pesos -as is the Family Emergency Income-, arguing that it implies a rise of 25 percent in the midst of the biggest economic crisis in decades.

“The fall in economic activity places us at levels similar to what the country had three years ago, when the minimum wage was 291,426 pesos (…) At that time the unemployment rate was 7.3 percent, almost half of the unemployment registered in the last moving quarter May-July, 13.1 percent, “argued Briones this Monday, through a statement.
In the text, the head of the Treasury defends that “This readjustment maintains the purchasing power of workers; it responds to the reality of the thousands of Chileans who are currently seeking employment; and is responsible with SMEs that today seek to recover and that they employ three out of four workers who earn the minimum. “
