On a day like today, but 30 years ago, the second and final inauguration of the Monumental stadium took place, the place of so many joys and Olympic laps of our beloved Colo Colo.
Little is recorded of that day. What is known to have been a duel against Peñarol from Uruguay, our current Copa Libertadores rival. 60 thousand people watched the Cacique triumph 2-1 with goals from Marcelo Barticciotto and Leonel Herrera.
A few minutes ago, the renowned Chilean photojournalist, Pepe Alvujar, uploaded some unpublished photos of that day in full HD. Image relics that were unrecorded to this day.
The Monumental Stadium is one of the most important venues, hosting the largest team Chile, the Chilean team, Copa América and a celebration of Copa Libertadores.
They have also seen several players pass by such as Neymar, Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sánchez, Claudio Bravo, Luis Suárez, in between another important player. Our beloved Monumental stadium.
On April 20, 1975 it was inaugurated for the first time. I had the fortune to be that day in that stadium as one more assistant, with my father and my mother, in the cement galleries in the match that Colo-Colo won over Aviation. I still remember that that first time in Pedreros the goal of the white victory was scored by striker Juan Carlos Orellana. Of course, the latter corresponds to a childhood memory that, years later, became a professional workday. It was on September 30, 1989 when the Monumental Stadium was officially inaugurated and I was there too, this time as a photojournalist. I remember with vivid images the festive and joyous atmosphere of that day. A happy stadium that received the smell of “sangche de potito”, sausages and avocado ham, a true town festival. Unforgettable for all of us who came to the stadium, it was, at that time, a true cloud of dust and dirt that haunted the audience in the absence of urbanization and green areas in the environment. A folkloric atmosphere and that due to the proximity of the national holidays was very similar to the inns and ramadas of the eighteen. In the run-up to the match, the organization of the event arranged for many tropical music bands to entertain the afternoon of the more than 60,000 spectators who were waiting for the duel between Colo-Colo and Peñarol. Everything was happening like a party for people who wanted to enjoy their stadium in full use, the Monumental David Arellano. But what undoubtedly broke the scheme of that day was the arrival of the Miss Universe, the Chilean @ceciliabolocco. She got out of a helicopter in the center circle of the court and a red carpet awaited her for the sumptuous journey of a beauty queen. Something, without a doubt, very paradoxical because of the Creole party that was lived in the gallery of the Stadium and that gave more spices to the day. In football terms, Colo-Colo beat Peñarol 2-1 with goals from @marcelobarti and Leonel Herrera. In a tough match against the Uruguayan multi-champion of America, the Albos were able to impose their football on their people who celebrated their new home in Macul. Thanks for the space and to help me build this story #PepeAlvujar ⭐
