Spanish Union, after being overwhelmed in the first half and having a late reaction, was eliminated in the second phase of the Copa Libertadores 2021, being thrashed this tuesday for 6-2 (6-3 aggregate) by Independiente del Valle in Quito.

The Hispanic team, which won the first leg in Santa Laura 1-0, could not hold the advantage and was overwhelmed by the Ecuadorians, who swept in the first half with four goals. In addition, coach Jorge Pellicer made changes that helped cut the distance, although time was insufficient to achieve the feat and turn the game around.

From the whistle of referee Wilmar Roldán, the locals, who played at the Liga de Quito stadium, were a gale that took advantage of all the spaces and errors of the Hispanic defense. In the first play there was an arrival, and in the second it was the goal of Pedro Vite, in minute 3 of the game.

Before 10 minutes, Independiente had arrived four times and the Hispanics did not react. At a quarter of an hour, the scoreboard was already 2-0 in favor of the Ecuadorians, with a goal from Brian Montenegro.

The dominance was total for Independiente del Valle, reaching 79 percent of possession against the Union players, who were static watching the homeowners play over and over again.

In the half hour, the third hit of Independiente del Valle arrived. Federico Platero committed a criminal foul, taking down Beder Caicedo, and Lorenzo Faravelli, from the 12 steps, decreed the 3-0.

Shortly before the break, at minute 39, Montenegro took advantage of a bad clearance by goalkeeper Diego Sánchez and signed his second staff, the fourth for Independiente in the cold Ecuadorian night.

Union made changes too late

For the complement, Pellicer made three modifications that changed the dynamics of the game. The team advanced their lines and achieved the discount of the illusion, with a great goal from Víctor Méndez (57 ‘).

However, that hope was immediately snuffed out, as the defense was badly stopped with the celebration and Faravelli signed his double for 5-1 (58 ‘).

Union did not lower his arms and at game time, after a personal move by “Joya” Carlos Palacios, again Méndez appeared and assisted Patricio Rubio for the second discount (60 ‘).

The reds of Santa Laura needed two more goals to achieve the feat of qualification, but Independiente closed their marks and controlled the scoreboard, betting on the counter to give the final thrust. This came at the last minute, with Montenegro sealing his triplet, scoring in the empty goal after the horrible reaction of the Hispanic defense (90 + 8 ‘).

In the next round, for a place in the group phase, Independiente del Valle will collide with Gremio, which eliminated Ayacucho.
