After the serious case of the young man pushed by a policeman into the Mapocho river from the Pío Nono bridge last Friday, UNICEF issued a statement requesting the Government to “protect the integrity” of minors who attend and participate in social demonstrations.
The United Nations Children’s Fund pointed out that “in the face of the acts of violence that occurred on October 2, where a teenager was seriously injured after falling into the Mapocho River as a result of the actions of a Carabineros official, Unicef reiterates its rejection of the use of violence by the police force and requests the Government to protect the physical and emotional integrity of all children and adolescents who participate in public demonstrations. “

The agency hopes that “this unfortunate event will lead the authorities to take the appropriate measures to prevent situations of violence that constitute serious violations of the human rights of children and adolescents from reoccurring.”
Likewise, Unicef valued that “quickly” actions be taken “by the Public Ministry, so that the situation is investigated with the speed it requires to punish those responsible.”
Finally, they called “on the authorities to take the necessary measures so that the uniformed police comply with the protocols and that there are no violations of the rights of the protesters.”
According to the antecedents, Carabineros made four calls to the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that the minor admitted to the Santa María Clinic had been detained.
