“Faced with the acts of violence that occurred on October 2, where a teenager was seriously injured after falling into the Mapocho River as a result of the actions of a Carabineros official, UNICEF reiterates its rejection of the use of violence by the police force and asks the Government to protect the physical and emotional integrity of all children and adolescents who participate in public demonstrations“read a statement.

The Children’s Fund appreciated that the Public Ministry has acted quickly and also said that it hopes that “the responsible authorities will take the corresponding measures to guarantee that these types of situations are not repeated in the future and that the country does not have to regret events like those that happened last year. “

“We hope that this unfortunate event will lead the authorities to take the appropriate measures to prevent situations of violence that constitute serious violations of the human rights of children and adolescents from reoccurring,” he said.

In the text he recalled that the table Interinstitutional Human Rights, led by the Minister of Justice, has worked this year on the revision of police protocols and on proposals for reforms to the Carabinerios.

“It is imperative that these reforms have a concrete expression in the actions of the police. The right to peaceful demonstration requires that the Government authorities ensure the protection of this right and this implies a radical modification of the conduct of the police forces“, Unicef ​​exposed.

Likewise, it expressed its concern regarding the probable demonstrations that may occur within the framework of the October 18 anniversary and that eventually “these trigger acts of violence that affect children and adolescents,” for which “we call on the authorities to take the necessary measures so that the uniformed police comply with the protocols and there are no violations of protesters’ rights “.

The organization also assured that it “condemns violence, regardless of where it comes from,” in which it called on “all sectors to create conditions for public demonstrations to take place in a peaceful framework and respect for the rights of all women. people who participate in them “.
