“Unacceptable and painful”: Minister Karla Rubilar questions the sayings of Izkia Siches and evaluates resignation from the Medical College

The Minister of Social Development and Family, Karla Rubilar, sent an open letter this Sunday to the president of the Medical College of Chile (COLMED) Izkia Siches, after the statements where she described in harsh terms the Government, the Minister Paris and the health policies imposed due to the pandemic in the country, in turn causing rejection in the political world and the Seremis and Health Services themselves.

Rubilar, who is also a medical surgeon, points out that “it is true that politics has played and will continue to play an important role in the Medical College and in the exercise of the profession, since it is necessary to admit and recognize that politics and medicine are two forms of public service. Thus, many doctors have held positions of popular election, however, the presidency of the Medical College plays another role. A role that often must be political, but which, in my opinion, should never be partisan”.

“You yourself, in the controversial conversation you had a few days ago, recognized that ‘I lost the degrees of freedom a while ago’, since ‘wherever I go I am the president of the Medical College.’ And also you, in an attitude full of courage, and that surely generated political and personal costs, opted to reach an agreement with the Government to reopen the schools, thereby demonstrating that their interest was placed on the well-being of boys and girls over political differences ”, adds Rubilar.

“Because of the above, Izkia, I find it incomprehensible and unacceptable that you now say that you take photos with ‘all the unhappy’ when it comes to the government. Let me tell you that your statements They surprise me, they pierce the position he holds, they break trust and beat his own stature as head of the institution he heads ”, says the head of Social Development and Family.

In the letter, Rubilar also questions the role of Siches in relation to her position as president of Colmed: “I also show that that his interview was not personal. You had in the background the logo of the Medical College of Chile, of which thousands of professionals without political distinction are part. In our union, all of us who chose this profession and not just those who voted for you must fit in and feel represented ”, he asserts.

“When one is wrong, and it has happened to me, it is important to recognize that error. Especially when one holds public positions that are so important for the future of Chile ”, he adds.

“Know that in me you will always find an ally when it comes to seeking the best for our union and for the country. I am clear that there is much more that unites us than what divides us. We have both learned in the field to face the challenges of being at the same time a woman, a mother, a doctor and occupying positions of high responsibility and public exposure. That’s why his words hurt me and I can’t and shouldn’t let them pass”.

“Unfortunately, and for different reasons, since the elimination of ethical protection in 1981, Professional Associations have lost a lot of ground and credibility. However, ours has managed to remain as a bulwark and it is important to keep it that way. The damage generated by their sayings can be a point of no return and we cannot afford that luxury. Not with the Medical College, not with our history”, Continues the minister.

“I hope, with the confidence generated by the weight of the institution of which we are both part, that it alters the course. Otherwise, it would not only be a great personal disappointment for me, but also with great sadness -for the years that I have been a collegiate- I would see the ethical need to present my resignation to the Medical College of Chile “, holds.

“This is not due to personal annoyance, but because their statements unfairly attack colleagues such as Dr. Paula Daza and Dr. Alberto Dougnac, the Medical Directors of Service and Seremis, the two-time President of the Order, Dr. Enrique Paris. , and all those who throughout Chile, day by day – with successes and errors – give their maximum effort for the well-being of our compatriots ”, concludes Rubilar.
