The UDI deputies Álvaro Carter and Osvaldo Urrutia announced the introduction of a new bill that seeks sanction the use of 3D printers for the manufacture of firearms.

This, the parliamentarians explained, considering the massiveness that 3D printers have had in recent years, which even allow the manufacture of firearms or weapons of mass destruction.

“3D printers allow the printing of any tangible object that is conceived and can be modeled in software. Thus, it is absolutely possible to use this technology for illicit purposes that cause harm to society, such as, for example, the printing of 3D weapons “, says the bill.

Along these lines, both parliamentarians even recalled that in 2018 an agreement was reached in the United States for the commercialization of manuals that allowed the home printing of firearms, which is currently suspended pending a ruling from justice.

For this reason, Carter and Urrutia pointed out that “as we know that criminals and drug trafficking groups are always managing to act, we as a State have to be able to anticipate them and regulate any type of gap that may exist in our legislation, and this is one of them “.

“We all know the scope of 3D printers and that they are becoming more massive in our country every day. And today it is no longer an argument for not legislating the high value of these products, because we know that criminal and drug trafficking groups handle many resources. That is why we decided to present this project and ask the Government to sponsor it, because we are facing a serious danger if we even consider that these 3D weapons do not even have a serial number “, warned the UDI parliamentarians.
