US President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he was going into quarantine pending his COVID-19 test results after a close associate tested positive.

“The First Lady and I are awaiting our test results,” the president tweeted. “In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process,” he added, without specifying how many days he plans to remain isolated.

As Trump confirmed to Fox News, Hope Hicks, a close counselor, recently contracted the virus.

“I will have the results tonight or tomorrow morning, but you know I spend a lot of time with Hope, just like the First Lady,” said the president.

Hope Hicks was aboard Air Force One with the president when he flew to Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday to take part in the debate against Joe Biden.

He also traveled Wednesday with Trump to Minnesota for a campaign rally.

The US president is regularly tested for covid-19, although the exact frequency with which these tests are performed is unknown.

Employees who work in the “West Wing” of the White House are evaluated daily, as are journalists who visit that section or travel with the president.
