“From tomorrow (Monday) no truck will pass. We had two months of a just social outbreak and Chile did not run out of supplies, therefore, I think that today is not an issue ”says Iván Mateluna, president of the Federation of Truck Owners of the Valparaíso Region (Fedequinta), after confirming to La Tercera blocking access to Puerto Valparaíso –by the La Pólvora road– and three terminals in Puerto San Antonio: Panul, DP World and IST.
The mobilization began on Thursday, within the framework of the trucking strike that extends indefinitely to different parts of the country, and which is led by the National Confederation of Freight Transport (CNTC).
In the bay of San Antonio, four ships remain on the tour, unable to unload 210 thousand tons of soybeans, corn and wheat in Puerto Panul. “Through the port of San Antonio, 90% of the grains consumed in Chile enter. This cargo is only transferred through that terminal, specialized for vegetable protein, but without storage areas, ”explained Carlos Mondaca, manager of public affairs for the San Antonio Port Company (EPSA).

Regarding the ships that carry containers, “there is no news at the moment, but the port has already reached 80% of its storage capacity,” said Mondaca.
For its part, the Valparaíso Port Company (EPV) reported that, for now, the available space is sufficient “depending on the number of ships served. If the strike is extended, contingency plans are activated beyond Wednesday, which basically consist of enabling additional backup areas in the port area for temporary storage, while the cargo cannot leave the terminals ”.
