For a few days, the numbers of coronavirus in the country have increased sharply. From an average of 400-500 new cases daily, we have more than doubled. A total of 22,016 cases are in our country today, a figure that has alarmed different leaders and authorities.
It is in this context that a group of 22 mayors from the Metropolitan Region signed a declaration calling on the Government to decree a total quarantine in the capital. “Due to the strong and persistent growth of covid-19 infections,” they point out. It should be remembered that the Metropolitan Region is made up of 52 communes, the majority urbanized, where only 18 of them are considered rural.
Financial aid to families
Understanding the complex economic scenario that would involve the total closure, the councilors ask for measures in this matter. “We consider that the methodology of strategic quarantines should be modified towards a total quarantine. This, provided that the indispensable financial and economic aid is delivered to the thousands of families who, due to the economic crisis, often do not even have the resources necessary for their subsistence, ”they specify in the document.
In the letter they also call to reinforce “public security and control, since we are concerned about the serious situation of insecurity, which is accentuated in hours of curfew.” A call of this type was made yesterday, when another group of mayors also met with the Minister of Defense, Alberto Espina.
And the vaccines?
The document does not stop there, and also requires speeding up the vaccination process. The Ministry of Health is being asked to comply with “the influenza vaccination goal set for April, which is to vaccinate 100% of the population at risk.” They also request to increase the number of health hotels available.
