In order to promote end-of-year festivities that contribute to the protection of the planet, the Seremi del Medio Ambiente of the Metropolitan Region in conjunction with Conaf Metropolitano started the campaign “This Christmas # RegalaUnÁrbol”.

The initiative seeks to motivate people to give something that gives meaning to this Christmas and that, at the same time, contributes to caring for the environment in a year strongly marked by the coronavirus pandemic.

“In this very difficult year for Chile and the world, we wanted to motivate citizens to give this Christmas a gift with meaning and that lasts, and what better than to give a tree over a material and traditional gift.

On the one hand, we make those who receive it happy and, on the other, we help the planet, since trees have multiple benefits: they are climate regulators because they capture and absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), the main Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and one of the main responsible for Climate Change, they are also the habitat of many species, regulate the Hydrological Cycle and maintain healthy, nourished and fertile soils, favoring agriculture “, expressed the Minister of the Environment RM, Diego Riveaux.

Donation to the residents of Santiago

The environmental authority together with the mayor of Santiago, Felipe Alessandri, the director of Conaf RM, Alex Madariaga, the deputy Jorge Alessandri and the councilor Leonel Herrera, arrived at the Las Carabelas Community where its residents received species of quebrachos and gingko biloba, trees that will be planted in their community spaces. This will be repeated in other Ecobarrios of the commune.

“We are very grateful for this donation to the residents of Santiago, which will serve to improve their common areas, as well as being a contribution to the commune, generating more green spaces. It seems very significant to us that, for this difficult year, this call is made to encourage good environmental practices, I hope that many feel called and give trees for this Christmas, “said Mayor Alessandri.

The trees, which are produced in Conaf’s nurseries, are donated within the framework of the institution’s Urban Arborization Program, which was extended to the Providencia, Ñuñoa, San Joaquín and Santiago communes during this Christmas season.

“As Conaf RM we are very happy to participate in this campaign and to be in the Santiago commune today. The ‘One Chilean, One Tree’ Arborization Program has been carried out since 2010, and to date we have 3,200,000 trees throughout Chile and this year alone in the Metropolitan Region we have delivered 72,000. Trees that signify quality of life and well-being for the people and families of the RM ”, said Alex Madariaga.
