The satirical weekly Charlie hebdo He republished cartoons of Muhammad in advance of the trial against the fourteen defendants in the terrorist attack that killed twelve people in the newsroom in 2015.
In the midst of the beginning of the historic judicial process, Charlie Hebdo assured in an editorial that he published digitally on Tuesday and that it will be available on Wednesday in French newsstands, that “they will not bring us to our knees. We will never resign ”.
“We have often been asked to do other cartoons of Muhammad. We had always rejected him, not because it is prohibited, but because a good reason was needed to do so, a reason that makes sense and that contributes something to the debate,” explains the editorial of the medium.
“To reproduce these cartoons in this week of the opening of the process of the attacks of January 2015 seems to us now indispensable,” adds the Charlie Hebdo team in their editorial.
Historical judgment
This Wednesday will begin the trial against fourteen suspected of having been accomplices of the attack that shocked the world five years ago, which also cost him his life and a municipal policeman targeted a Jewish supermarket in Paris.
Justice accuses the suspects of participation in a criminal terrorist organization and in varying degrees of complicity, ranging from logistical, financial and criminal support. The prosecution requests sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.
