Customs inspection personnel, Carabineros and SAG officials reported an operation in which They rescued 25 purebred puppies that were being smuggled into the controls of the New Los Libertadores Border Complex.
The personnel considered a Van-type vehicle with tinted windows in the vicinity of the complex as suspicious, for which they requested the intervention of the Carabineros on the route, where after a follow-up the vehicle was stopped and they had to return to Los Libertades.
There, the inspectors found that the puppies were hidden in the back of the van and in poor condition.
The Los Andes Prosecutor’s Office determined the immediate transfer of the dogs to the Carabineros offices of the Prefecture of the commune, where they received the first attention.
In detail, it was about 6 French Bulldogs, 4 English Bulldogs, 1 Dachshund, 1 Maltese, 5 Pit Bulls and 8 Pomeranians.
The Los Andes Customs Administrator, Mariano Gómez, indicated that after the discovery the animals were immediately transferred to receive medical attention because they were in very poor condition.
He added that the customs appraisal of the 25 puppies exceeds $ 15 million. The driver of the vehicle and two passengers, of Chilean nationality, were arrested for the crimes of animal abuse and customs smuggling, when they tried to enter the hidden animals into the country, evading the payment of taxes.
In the detention control, it was determined to deliver the puppies for temporary care, while the investigation is developing, to 3 animal care organizations. Thus, 12 dogs will go to the San Miguel ProAni Group, 5 to the Stuka Foundation in Casablanca and 8 to the Los Andes Animal Rescue Group.
