They repaint the statue of General Baquedano after being intervened during demonstrations this Sunday – Nacional

This is the second time that the same situation has occurred, since the monument had been painted red in the demonstration on Friday, being quickly repaired, however in the concentration this Sunday it was again intervened by unknown persons.

Let us remember that the Army had expressed its annoyance at what happened during the disorders with the statue and revealed its intention to move it to a safer place.

Regarding the acts of vandalism carried out today against the equestrian monument of General Manuel Baquedano González, and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Institution states the following:

 The Chilean Army regrets and rejects the vandalization of which the figure of General Baquedano, who was a hero and a relevant actor in the definition of the territorial limits that Chile currently has, has once again been the object.

 It is surprising and incomprehensible that the monument that the State of Chile itself erected in recognition of his exemplary military career and personal life dedicated to the country, its memory is violated by the attitude of some people who turn their resentment and frustration on symbols that represent each of the Chileans.

 On the other hand and as requested by the Institution to the Council of National Monuments, we reiterate the request to exhaust the measures so that higher standards of security are provided to the monument, and in case this cannot be guaranteed, it be transferred to a public place, close to the Bicentennial Army Building, so that it remains under the protection and protection of the Chilean Army.

 Those who do not recognize the sacrifice delivered by thousands of compatriots who have allowed the history of Chile to be written will hardly be able to project the country towards a future to which we all aspire. The vast majority of Chileans value and respect the heritage of our ancestors and want to progress and develop in peace.
