This Wednesday, all the padlocks that couples in love hung over the last three years – almost 3,000 units – but that finally became a threat to those who transited the place daily were removed.
Just as in December of that year it was decided to clean the bridge, this time the same argument prevailed. “The Municipality of Providencia commissioned a technical report from a structural engineering company, which left a significant risk for people who transit through this place, because the padlocks attached to the rails, reach almost a ton of weight, deforming the structure and exceeding the maximum weight allowed, “he explained to Odometer the municipal administrator of Providencia, Paulina Lobos.
“This is worrying, since it can mean a serious accident or even death, in the event that a person leans on the structure. For this reason, it was necessary to remove the padlocks and other elements attached to the structure , works that will be complemented with the reinforcement of the areas that are now damaged to restore the minimum security conditions, “said Lobos.
Already in 2017 it was explained that if there are about 50 padlocks for every square meter of railing, the extra weight that the structure supports could easily exceed half a ton.
And it is that they began from Santiago to look towards Europe, since in 2014 there was a collapse of a part of the fence of the Pont des Arts, also in Paris, which ended up falling into the Seine.
Just as in France then, many rusty padlocks, witnesses to the love that hundreds of couples promised each other, went to the landfill.
