Hugo Bustamante has been in preventive detention since last August for the crime of Ámbar Cornejo: he was formalized for rape, femicide and illegal burial.

Judge Daniela Rodríguez pointed out at the time that this precautionary measure is “essential for the security of society.” Regarding the investigation time, a term of 120 days was agreed.

Two months after the formalization and from prison, the defendant wrote a letter, the content of which was released for 24 hours. In it, he asks to see Denisse Llanos, Ámbar Cornejo’s mother, who is following the same precautionary measure.

“I come before you to request a visit with my wife Denisse Llanos Lazcano, who is being held in the San Miguel prison at this time, for which we have not had any contact”wrote Bustamante.

It should be noted that this meeting would be through “visits by digital platforms.”

Let’s remember that face-to-face visits have been suspended due to the pandemic since April, so inmates only have access to video calls to contact relatives or close friends.

“A mockery”

This request from Bustamante was qualified as a mockery by the group “Justice for Ámbar”.

“We feel that it is a mockery for Ámbar Cornejo’s memory that there is a request for communication between Llanos and Bustamante. We believe that it is a joke and it would be a shame if they authorized this contact, ”said Karina Martínez, a member of the group.

The letter was delivered by the Gendarmerie to Villa Alemana Guarantee Court, dated October 10, which rejected his request.

As Carolina González, partner of Mac Abogados, explained to the media, it is not recommended that two defendants in a case have communication, since “both they could change their alibis, their versions, trying to obtain a much more favorable result for them, how to agree on how the events happened and sabotage in some other way the correct development of the investigation ”.

It should be noted that both Hugo Bustamante and Denisse Llanos are awaiting the oral trial, where the penalties they would serve for their responsibility in the death of Ámbar Cornejo will be determined.

Let us remember that the 16-year-old teenager was found dead on August 6, after having been missing for a week.

As indicated at the time by the director of the PDI, Héctor Espinoza, the remains of the young woman were found buried inside Bustamante’s property, specifically in the courtyard. “In some coolers there are skeletal remains, the truth is that there is almost the complete body and clothes that belong to the minor,” he said.

Ámbar had been seen for the last time that day around the house of her stepfather, who I had a restraining order from her.

There, Ámbar would have assisted to withdraw part of the money that her father from Antofagasta sent her, for alimony, which was given to her by her mother.

After the discovery, the arrest of Bustamante was reported by the Investigative Police, in conjunction with the Villa Alemana Prosecutor’s Office, for his alleged participation in the disappearance of Cornejo.

The case generated great impact and social repercussions, which led to demonstrations and even an attack on the house of the minor’s mother, for which the woman was transferred to a safer place.

On September 2, the young woman was fired with a Massive funeral procession in Villa Alemana. For health reasons, his closest environment was present at the funeral.
