Witnesses recorded an unusual event that occurred in the city of Londrina, Brazil, on March 17, after a 45-year-old COVID-19 patient escaped from a hospital for fear of being intubated.
According to the Globo media, the patient walked several blocks along an avenue and was chased by two health officials, who caught up with him after a few minutes.
Due to the physical effort he had made, apart from the lung condition, the man had to return to the University Hospital with an oxygen mask.
Through a statement, from the premises they indicated that the affected person suffered a panic attack due to the fear of being intubated, so he simply chose to run away.
“When asked about the reason for his escape, he said he was afraid and anguished about the possible worsening of his clinical condition”, they expressed.
To that they added that the patient was able to calm down after having a talk with a psychologist, in addition to receiving a visit from his loved ones.
He is currently connected to an oxygen equipment. Although its current state is delicate, it has not worsened over the days.
Brazil is experiencing quite complex days due to the pandemic. In recent days the country has registered peaks of 90,000 infections a day, to which are added more than 240,000 deaths.
