The municipality of Coronel in the Bío Bío region declared a “communal alert” after the completion of the Copec maritime terminal was approved.

There were almost 50 leaders who demonstrated against this project that seeks install seven oil ponds to supply the southern part of the country.

This project had been rejected in November of last year by the regional commission of the Environmental Assessment Service, with a decisive vote from the mayor of the region himself, however, in recent days the decision was reversed after approval by the national leadership of the SEA.

What caused the discomfort of social leaders and authorities who demonstrated in the industrial park of the northern sector of Coronel, where the Copec maritime terminal would be installed, with various ponds with a capacity of 19 thousand cubic meters of oil.

The neighborhood leader of Escuadron Sur, Sonia Sanhueza, expressed her rejection of the installation. “Concerned about our people, the majority of the elderly. We have fed up children there are three schools nearby, less than 300 meters and the inhabitants within 500 meters ”, he detailed.


Likewise, Mayor Boris Chamorro pointed out that it is a project that was approved behind closed doors, behind the backs of the citizens and that they will be a staunch opposition to its installation in Coronel.

“It seems to us an environmental shame of a national nature,” said the communal chief.

Consulted the seremi of Environment, Mario Delannays, pointed to the need to modify the Environmental Assessment System that today allowed, he said, these contradictions.

The communal authority announced that it will present legal actions to the Valdivia Environmental Court and future mobilizations in rejection of a project that affects a commune considered as a sacrificial zone.
