The Undersecretary of Human Rights, Lorena Recabarren, is at the center of criticism from groups that promote the rights of the LGBTIQ + community, due to the position he expressed on conversion therapies in the session of the Senate Human Rights Commission, where the reform of the Zamudio law.
Recabarren made the statement when participating electronically in the appointment, where he expressed himself regarding an indication from Senator Adriana Muñoz that prohibits conversion therapies of sexual orientations or gender identities at all events.
“I understand that this is referring to the ban on conversion therapies. (…) Every year the State of Chile has stated that it opposes conversion therapies. However, as it is written, it is in absolute terms, and could even apply to cases where the consent of the person to be treated could exist.“Said the undersecretary, adding that” there we would have a problem because we could go against the will of a person. “
To conclude, Recabarren stated that “bearing in mind the conviction of the prohibition of conversion therapies, in the sense of forcing people to try to change the internal conviction they have regarding their gender identity or expression or their sexual orientation … That is to say, having that very clearly, in the way it is written, it could happen that a person if he wanted or was available, had the will to do so, and we would be pointing out that this type of act would be discriminatory. In that sense, it seems to me that the indication is not properly written.
