Queen Elizabeth II gave an emotional Christmas speech, seeking to instill hope, something present “in the darkest nights”, to the British very affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
What did he say?
“For many, this year will be marked by sadness: Some mourn the loss of a loved one, friends and family feel lack of others, while for Christmas they would like a simple hug or a handshake, “said the sovereign, 94 years old.
“If this is your case, you are not alone,” he said.
The covid-19 pandemic has claimed some 70,000 lives in the UK, one of the worst balance sheets in Europe.
New strain
The recent worsening of the crisis, linked, according to the authorities, to a new strain of the fastest contagious coronavirus, it has led the government to revoke the authorization for families to gather for Christmas in many regions.
The queen resigned to move to her residence in Sandringham, Norfolk (eastern England), where she has shared Christmas with her children and other royals for more than 30 years.
She was secluded in Windsor Castle, near London, with her husband, Prince Philip, 99.
“We cannot celebrate Christmas as usual (…) but life must go on”, Elizabeth II affirmed.

He highlighted the example of those who have volunteered to help the most vulnerable, health workers and “good Samaritans who emerged throughout society.”
“We continue to be inspired by the solidarity of strangers and find comfort in realizing that even in the darkest nights there is hope,” he added.
“In the UK and around the world, people have responded magnificently to this year’s challenges, and I am proud and moved by this quiet and indomitable spirit,” she confided.
During the confinement in the spring (boreal), when the government’s management of the health crisis was criticized, and even Prime Minister Boris Johnson himself was infected by covid-19 and had to be hospitalized, the queen went in two occasions to the British, something that he has only done exceptionally apart from his Christmas speeches during his 69 years of reign.
