“It was a private meeting of friends and not a political meeting”, one of the DC militants hurries to say that this Thursday afternoon he agreed to meet via Zoom with the mayor of Recoleta Daniel Jadue (PC).
It is one of the first approaches of the probable presidential figure of the Communist Party with members of the phalanx after successive public opinion polls that place him as the highest ranked opposition figure in the face of the next presidential elections. And it occurs within the framework of the public controversy that the mayor has sustained with figures of the former new Majority such as the helmsman of the DC, Fuad Chahin, who assured that “It would be a disaster for the country if people have to choose between a communist and a UDI.”
Those who knew the genesis of yesterday’s meeting, summarized it by pointing out that the goal was to listen to Jadue and make it clear that -despite the high-sounding statements of the opposition leadership and the presidential PC himself, who has been critical of the DC several times- bridges remain.
Originally the appointment was going to take place yesterday at 4:00 p.m. and 16 figures from the DC were confirmed to her. However, The meeting took place after 5.30 p.m. and Jadue and 10 Falangists arrived.
Among the attendees were two directors of the Chile 21 foundation: the former undersecretary of Justice Nicolás Mena and former undersecretary of the Environment, Jorge Canals, as well as attorney Constanza Tobar, former second-floor adviser to President Michelle Bachelet and current CNTV counselor; the lawyer Eugenio Ravinet; the former Undersecretary of Fisheries, Pablo Berazaluse and Rodrigo Vera, DC leader in the Fifth Region.
According to one version of the meeting, the president of the DC was warned of the meeting. However, the leader assured La Tercera PM that he was not aware of the meeting until this morning.
What was talked about? The DCs and Jadue addressed the historical relationship between the DC and the PC. And they raised the need to act with unity to confront the right wing. The conclusion was that both sectors are needed.
The state of progress of the municipal negotiation was touched. And both the mayor PC and the militants DC stated that their respective communities are the ones that have made the most effort to reach an effective electoral pact.
Public friction was also a topic. Jadue – who has publicly accused a sector of the opposition of anticommunism – said that has not been well treated since his irruption in the polls and thus explained the harsh tone he has used towards the leadership of the DC and the rest of the opposition.
In this regard, several agreed that the current opposition lacks pragmatism to assume its diversityWhile the right wing has been “astute” and seeks to take advantage of the fact that it has “from Pinochetists to figures like Lavín”, who today declare themselves social democrats. Jadue nodded and listened, according to an aide.
The mayor also spoke at length about his municipal management, commented on the universal basic income from work and commented the good relationship that exists between DC and PC militants in Recoleta.
Guests at the focus yesterday with Jadue insist on the social character of the appointment. “It was a meeting of friends that Jadue also attended”, replied the former undersecretary Jorge Canals, who excused himself from referring to the meeting. Coincidentally, yesterday afternoon the former undersecretary alluded to the mayor of Recoleta on Twitter.
The Third PM contacted Mayor Jadue but until press time did not receive a response.
