U.S is “ready to react” if Iran attacks him on the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of the general Qassem Soleimaniwarned on Sunday the chief of US forces in the Middle East, General Frank McKenzie, on a tour of the region two weeks before that event.
“We are ready for our defense and that of our friends and allies in the region, and we are ready to react if necessary,” McKenzie, chief of the United States Army Central Command (Centcom), told reporters.
“We are in a very good position and we will be ready, whatever the Iranians or their allies decide to do,” he added in a telephone interview from an unspecified location in the region.
The Centcom commander said he traveled to Baghdad, where he met with the head of the anti-jihadist coalition forces, US General Paul Calvert, as well as the Iraqi chief of staff, General Abdul Amir Yarallah.
He also traveled to Syria to meet the forces deployed at the al-Tanf base in the south.
This unannounced tour is a sign that the United States fears an Iranian operation to avenge the powerful Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, killed on January 3, 2020, during a drone strike near the Baghdad airport.
