Are we in the presence of the beginning of the peak of infections in Chile? The figures released today by the Ministry of Health could confirm this feeling: 1,658 new cases (31,721 in total) and 12 new deaths, of which half correspond to the Metropolitan Region, so that the fatal victims amount to 335. For the eighth consecutive day more than a thousand new cases were registered and in almost two weeks the number of infected doubled.
Precisely, in the daily conference of the Minsal, the most “uncomfortable” question was for the undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Arturo Zúñiga. “How close are we to full saturation of the system? A report from the University of Chile says that this saturation could come next week. How much did this attempt to resume the “new normality” influence the numbers that we are seeing today? “They asked Zúñiga, who replied:” If we had not prepared ourselves, 100% occupation would have come days ago. “
The counter-question was not long in coming: “But two weeks ago, citizens were being told that they could resume a new normal. So there is not a contradiction there and is that what we are seeing today? ” “There is no evidence that there is a correlation,” explained Zúñiga. Later, the Health Minister, Jaime Mañalich, acknowledged that “we are concerned about the speed of increases. We are increasing capacity (…) ”. Later, President Sebastián Piñera added: “The next few weeks will be the most difficult.”
Coronavirus cases in Chile doubled in 12 days
As of April 30, those infected were just over 16 thousand. However, as of today, the figure is close to 32,000 infected. In the fifth month of the year, in just two days there were less than a thousand cases a day.
