It was not the best number, but it was very close. On November 30, the traditional epidemiological report of the Ministry of Health brought good news for the Metropolitan Region: with 32.6 active cases per 100,000 inhabitants, it was among the regions with the lowest proportion of Covid-19 infections, and it was just above its record in recent months, with an incidence rate of 27.9.
A month later, the scenario is much more worrying. According to the latest epidemiological report from the Minsal, released this Saturday, the MRI has practically doubled its active cases since that date: the incidence rate now reaches 61.3 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
In addition, within the panorama – with information up to December 31, 2020 – there are some communes that generate relevant alerts due to very significant increases in the period.
For example, Renca increased its active cases by more than four times: it went from having a rate of 19.9 to 82.1. Cerrillos is another case, where the growth was more than three times: from 13.5 to 64.4. Something similar happened in Lo Prado (from 26.8 to 81.4 infections per 100,000 inhabitants).
Of all the Greater Santiago, the commune with the highest rate is Vitacura. With an incidence rate of 94.0 -also almost three times more than the 32.0 it had at the end of November-, it shares the stage with two other communes in the eastern zone, such as Providencia (from 24.7 to 71 , 6) and La Reina (from 21.9 to 58.9).
Other communes with relevant increases in the period are San Miguel (rate of active cases of 83.4), Peñalolén (67.5), Estación Central (53.2), Lo Barnechea (75.8) and San Ramón (64, 7). Of course, only one commune exceeds 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the entire region: Curacaví (101.6).
At the opposite extreme, seven communes show decreases in their rates compared to November: Huechuraba, La Pintana, Melipilla, Lo Espejo, Tiltil, El Monte and Alhué. In the latter case, the achievement is even more significant, since it went from a rate of 81.0 active cases to not having any contagion in this condition to receive 2021.
