A complex scenario awaits the head of the interior portfolio, Víctor Pérez, after the erratic defense that he initially presented – and that he had to erase later – where he jeopardized the credibility of his arguments. This after in a first attempt he sought to detach himself from his institutional responsibilities with the Carabineros, accusing that under a State of Exception, his management would be under the Ministry of Defense, passing the post to his peer, Mario Desbordes, which also generated an internal conflict in La Moneda that brought with it a reprimand from the President to his chief of staff.
Today, in an interview with La Tercera, the minister of the General Secretariat of Government (Segpres), Cristián Monckeberg, played the letter of discredit to try to stop the advance of the accusation that this Tuesday is voted in the Chamber and that, if approved , would immediately suspend Interior Minister Víctor Pérez from his duties pending the vote in the Senate.
“We fully trust that part of the opposition is not going to support this constitutional accusation, which, in our opinion, is politically biased. The opposition has time to avoid a historical error, which, if committed, would cost a lot to erase. The opposition has a chance not to endorse it, “Monckeberg told the morning paper.
The Secretary of State assured that “an unfounded accusation of this type cannot be understood,” above all, he added, “after Sunday (the day of the Plebiscite) had such a powerful signal from citizens where everything was impeccable and where everyone We opted for the institutional way, the peaceful way and for the future. ” For this reason, for the head of the Segpres, everything can lead to a “historical error” that, as he reiterated, “the opposition is in time not to commit.”
Monckeberg added that it would be unfortunate to interpret the Approval as motivating the opposition to push for such a constitutional indictment. In that case, he says, “it reaffirms the lack of foundation of this accusation.”
“I have read the accusation and I came to the conclusion that it is contradictory, misleading and politically biased”, sentenced the Minister of the Segpres, Cristián Monckeberg.
It is worth mentioning that this Tuesday the accusatory libel is voted after the commission evacuated last Thursday a favorable report with 4 votes to 1, and that after an agreement of the benches it was decided to delay its vote that was originally scheduled for last Friday .
In the Chamber, 50% plus one of the votes of those present is needed and, if there is complete attendance, the threshold is 78. Thus, as the banks of Chile Vamos add 73 seats, La Moneda needs five wayward votes to wreck the libel. The problem is that the opposition’s calculator shows that they would have 80 aligned votes to approve the accusation and that they are expected to reach 82.
There are four factors that warn of a climate that is not very conducive to the claims of the interior chief and that have the Executive aware of a real probability of being left without his third minister in the portfolio.
The first, a new defense without credibility. Let us remember that the ruling party itself affirmed that the erratic move by Pérez’s defense on Thursday, trying to throw the ball at the Defense portfolio, undermined the credibility of any argument that has subsequently been made to “save” the minister.
Furthermore, in the second place, the Government is not in any favor that this accusation is sponsored and “pushed” by the DC, precisely because it is in this party where the Government is betting on the drop outs and the pirouette of votes in its favor. But that is not all. Unlike other occasions, on this issue, the community seems to walk more united than ever; which became terrible news for Palacio.
And it is that in the eyes of La Moneda, and as a third point that complicates the Executive, the fact that it is the DC that leads this accusation would confer a halo of “common sense” to the libel, neutralizing the undecided. It should not be forgotten that the accusation against Mañalich was brought by the Frente Amplio and failed for various reasons, one of which was the pending accounts between sectors of the phalanx and the bloc of the Frenteamplismo.
Last but not least, the fact arises that today no one wants to be singled out as the “breaker”, something that has been transformed into no less pressure on the opposition. As we told you yesterday, considering the above, you would be betting on avoiding major stumbling blocks such as dropping the accusation against one of the emblematic figures of the Rejection and a right that was left against the ropes with the result of the polls that night October 25.
Now, the Government has a couple of days to deploy government advisers in order to try to reverse things, a mission that they coincide in pointing out that it is almost impossible.
