At least 16 people arrested, a hundred vehicles seized and about 20 properties seized, left a Carabineros operation destined to capture the gang behind the “Robbery of the Century” occurred in September 2017. The arrest of a guard for another crime allowed the unlocking of an investigation that for years had not been accused.

It must have been more than three years so that progress could be made in this investigation, which ended with a major operation in 20 real estate properties in the Valparaíso and Metropolitan regions by the OS-9 units, the Order and Search for Persons service and the anti-narcotics OS-7 of the police.

The case dates back to the night of September 18, around 11:30 p.m., in the middle of the celebrations of National Holidays.

Inside the securities company Esertval, from calle Domingo Santa María 1846 in the commune of Independencia, were two guards in the custody of vaults where the money of banks, highway concessionaires and even the Metro company were kept.

According to the account of those affected, one of them went without his service weapon to a commercial premises near the company on Domingo Santa María street to buy cigarettes. It was at that moment, according to his statement, that would have been gunned down by a group of assailants, forced to open the access door of the building to later be tied up with his partner in an office.

With the oxyfuel system the band opened the vaults and loaded into supermarket carts $ 15.8 billion to flee with the large loot in four 4 × 4 vehicles, but not before disabling the company’s alarms and security cameras.

In addition, the assailants burned one of the vehicles used in the robbery.

The two detained guards and the detail that left one exposed

After a complex investigation work, enough clues were obtained to arrest at least one 16 people linked to the robbery.

According to sources of the investigation, among the accused are the two vigilantes supposedly assaulted.

One of them is currently serving preventive detention after being arrested on the night of March 29 in the commune of Lo Prado, in the middle of the curfew, carrying an armament of war, a revolver, 100 cartridges, seven cell phones, and $ 300,000 in cash.

According to the investigation, in that seizure a detail was found that clarified this case: said bills would have serial numbers of those abducted in the robbery.

On September 21, 2017, Radio Bío Bío spoke with one of the vigilantes. There he had the opportunity to give his version of events.

The guard, identified as Jesús Bravo, was the one who stayed at the company when his partner went shopping. “The investigation will tell everything,” he said regarding the suspicions against him, ensuring that he was calm because “whoever does nothing, fears nothing.” Although, he recognized that being aware that “I am suspect number one until I prove otherwise “

The other guard, who had gone out to buy cigarettes, was identified as Eduardo Moya Rodríguez and would be the one who is detained for carrying the weapon of war. He and Bravo are brothers-in-law.

Two other detainees, meanwhile, were also in preventive prison for having committed crimes in recent months, also carrying weapons.

Along with the accused, the police seized jewelry, valuables and at least 100 vehicles, several of them high-end, and some bundles of money without specifying the amount. To this would be added a score of properties.

The material authors

Despite the fact that the information continues to be kept confidential, it emerged that among the detainees are part of the material authors of the theft, who provided coverage the night of September 19 and those who allowed money laundering.

This is expected to be specified during the formalization, which will take place this Wednesday. Although, the North Central Prosecutor’s Office could request the extension of detention waiting for new proceedings.

In the development of the investigation, several resources were deployed, such as drone tracking, social media monitoring and wiretapping.

The Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Rodrigo Delgado, was emphatic in pointing out that justice, in this case, is coming.

This theft of $ 15.8 billion is considered the largest in the criminal history of Chile (with the exception of ‘neck and tie’ crimes or fraud against the State), followed by the $ 13 billion stolen on March 9 of this year from the Aerosan company; and the assault on the Santiago Airport slab on a securities truck on August 12, 2014, with the theft of $ 6 billion.
