This Wednesday the Government’s minimum wage proposal was rejected in the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies, after yesterday they decided to suspend the vote to try to reach an agreement.
Agreement that did not arrive, since the opposition requested a minimum floor of increase of 10,000 pesos, to which the Government did not agree.
By 78 votes against, 53 in favor and 14 abstentions, the Government’s proposal was rejected.
So, The idea of legislating is rejected and now the Executive must insist on the Senate, where 2/3 of the votes are required for its approval.
In this regard, the Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, commented that “Our greatest concern is employment. Three out of four workers who earn the minimum wage are in the SME. We well know that this is the worst hit sector in this country. The readjustment has to keep this in perspective ”, complement.
In addition, he regretted not having been able to reach an agreement with the CUT or with the deputies, although he appreciated the effort to dialogue.
“We wanted to advance in a readjustment along the same lines – 6 thousand pesos – which was what existed in the last two readjustments of the Government of President Bachelet, which was a different context,” lamented the minister.
