What has been leaked?

Breath of the Wild Nintendo 64 sequel

For now, it appears that the entire packet shared across networks exceeds 2 TBHowever, it is suspected that there is even more data to reveal, we will see if more sensitive. Among the details that have been seen in the thousands of files published, the Wii source code undoubtedly stands out, some files that reveal the way in which the console works in great detail and that would serve to know some of the ins and outs of Nintendo when developing their consoles.

Among all the information published, the most striking points that have been seen are the following:

  • Boot sector source code 0/1/2
  • Diagrams and datasheets of each internal component including the verilog for AES / SHA
  • BroadOn documentation with details of future plans and implementation, with APIs and internal software documents.
  • The SDK and the complete source code of the Wii operating system (IOS)
  • Documents on the implementation of the system from 2004 to 2006
  • Source code of some Wii SDK libraries (DVD, EXI)
  • Source code and system manufacturing information
  • Various internal Nintendo information documents
  • A special version for manufacturers that allows you to run code from SD cards on Wii
  • Nintendo internal presentation powerpoints

Additionally, among the files were several demo compilations created to show the potential of the Nintendo 64. These demos have been compiled and run on emulators to see what they were hiding. The result, as you can see, are simple demonstrations of polygonal figures and simple games to demonstrate the graphic power of what would then be the new Nintendo console.

Where did the information come from?

Apparently all the information has been extracted from the servers of BroadOn, a company with which Nintendo usually collaborates when manufacturing its hardware. Considering that they are in charge of manufacturing the consoles, it is not strange to know now that they had very sensitive information related to the bowels of the devices.

The origin of the Nintendo friend codes

Among many other things, something that has been known about it thanks to this massive leak is related to the friend codes of the Nintendo network. As you well know, when adding a new friend to our network of contacts, we must enter a personal and non-transferable number that belongs to each player we want to add.

This number is usually annoying for players, since it is difficult to memorize and is not at all useful to share with other users. But which thinking mind at Nintendo came up with this idea? Apparently, when designing the Nintendo online network, the company discarded the traditional user names because they generate confusion when it comes to writing them and often cause frustration when they discover that the one you wanted is busy.

These factors, according to Nintendo, affect the wonderful experience that the company tries to transmit with its philosophy, so they chose to use simple, completely impersonal numbers that only serve this function. Happy?

What can happen after this leak

At the moment the collateral damages, although they are quite a lot, do not affect the current direction of the company. There are no details that compromise current platforms, so it should be seen to what extent the publication of the Wii source code affects the development of current and future Nintendo consoles.

Right now the scene community is rubbing their hands, since with this type of information they could give life to many projects that until now were blocked by certain limitations, although obviously that will not change the legality problems that exist in these cases. The worst thing of all is that this hard blow comes to Nintendo after suffering hacks in many of their accounts of its online service, something that invited users to activate double verification on accounts to reinforce their security.
