The United States Navy announced this Saturday the cancellation of the search and rescue actions of a 20-year-old sailor who fell into the sea this week from the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt.

The Navy said in a statement that it ended the operation late Saturday evening after combing more than 2,082 square kilometers (607 nautical miles) for more than 55 hours off the coast of Southern California.

The search began Thursday morning when a lookout spotted what appeared to be a person in the water, said the 3rd Fleet, which is based in San Diego.

Three helicopters and a boat were dispatched, and a sailor was missing during a command review, the statement said.

The family identified the missing sailor as ammunition and weapons transfer pilot apprentice Ethan Goolsby of San Antonio, Texas, reported Scripps affiliate KSAT television.

They notify the family of the lost sailor

“The loss of our sailor weighs heavily on everyone on board,” said Captain Eric Anduze, commander of Theodore Roosevelt. “The entire Theodore Roosevelt team sends our deepest condolences to the family of our missing colleague.”

Rear Admiral Doug Verissimo, commander of Aircraft Carrier Strike Group Nine, said the unit “sends our thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones of our missing comrade. I thank all the sailors and members of the Coast Guard who participated in the search, ”reported the KGTV.

The sailor’s family was notified before the search was canceled, according to the Navy.
