Little remains of the brilliant footballer of the Catholic University.

Luis Núñez (1980, La Legua) has been locked up in the Santiago Security jail for 13 months, to which are added another 14 months of being a fugitive in Bolivia.

The reason? Accused of being the perpetrator of the murder of Juan Pinto Vásquez, “El trompi”, who was enjoying his birthday with friends. According to the investigation, Núñez and his friend Andrés Vergara were seen carrying a firearm. They were from rival gangs.

Everything would have happened outside the house where they were going to buy grams of marijuana, in La Legua. Núñez is accused of giving protection to Vergara, who, according to the investigation, pulled the trigger over and over again against the victim.

In an interview with La Tercera, “Lucho Pato” as he was known in soccer jargon breaks the silence and pleads innocence.

“I’m innocent. I have not killed anyone. I’ve never had a gun in my hands. It is impossible to have killed someone without a gun, “says the former player.

“I was there that day. In fact, it was there, but from there to kill a person … for that you need a gun and I did not have it at that time and never had it at the time of the events. It is impossible that I have shot or killed someone ”.

His days in jail

After being trapped in Bolivia, where he traveled with his partner and children, due to wiretapping and carrying false Chilean documents with an adulterated name, Núñez recounts his days in prison.

“I am locked up for 21 hours a day, imagine. In a 2 × 3 piece. Only. I watch TV, I read the bible, I exercise. And that, more cannot be done ”.

Although he was first held in Santiago 1, upon arrival he was stabbed in the leg and had to be transferred to the High Security Prison “Yes, but everything is fine with that,” he is quick to point out.

Hunger strike

After considering that the investigation has not followed its normal course and they want to harm him because of who he is, Núñez began a hunger strike at the end of 2020.

“I lost 26 kilos in weight. I did not eat for 95 days, pressing for the folder to be closed. I had 85 days without food and 10 days without eating or drinking water. I stopped the strike for family reasons ”, he explains.

“I think that taking my life crosses my mind every day. I was treated for depression. I smoke a pack a day, which I never did because I didn’t smoke before ”.

“Being locked up for 21 hours, with 100 vinchucas, which are the cheap ones, walking on the wall, over your body, is not pleasant for a person who is innocent.”

“I was wrong, it is clear to me, I was wrong a thousand times and that cost me to lose my career. But now I can’t lose my life for something I didn’t do ”.
