This Monday, the resignation of the head of the Epidemiology Department of the Ministry of Health, Rafael Araos, was announced.

The Minsal has already determined his successor according to DNA radio. She is Alejandra Pizarro, a surgeon at the Diego Portales University and a public health specialist at the Pontificia Universidad Católica.

Araos had assumed his position on March 23, and he leaves his position, according to Minsal sources, because now he will assume responsibilities strictly linked to COVID-19, such as the relationship with universities, with technical organizations such as ICOVID and other institutions.

In his previous position, Araos was supposed to handle all notifiable illnesses, and in his new role as advisor he will be focused squarely on the coronavirus.

Araos also appeared in the statements made by the Prosecutor’s Office in the framework of the investigation into the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, which mainly targets the former Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich. In his testimony, he assured that the counting system that Mañalich used “whatever it was, it did not give the width.”

The Minsal through a statement thanked “these five months in charge of the epidemiology chief and also thanked him for assuming this important role of strategic advisor to Covid-19.”

Regarding Pizarro’s arrival, Minsal adds that “she is a member of the Chilean epidemiology society and has worked in primary health care and as director of the Observatory of Infectious Diseases of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Adult at the Faculty of Medicine University Catholic, focusing on research and dissemination, which gives him a great background to face this position that has to follow the course of mandatory notification diseases, beyond the Covid that this department sees. We wish you good luck and without a doubt It will be a great contribution to the Ministry of Health. “
