Three years after the sinking of the Argentine submarine ARA San Juan, one of the defendants in the case, Rear Admiral Luis Enrique López Mazzeo, provided details of the search for the ship, stating that the Chilean vessel Cabo de Hornos had managed to find its location 20 days after its disappearance and that this information was known to the government of then-President Mauricio Macri.
According to López, the Argentine government knew since December 5, 2017 the position of the ship and that its 44 crew members had died inside. The former commander affirmed these statements before the Federal Court of Appeals of Comodoro Rivadavia, where he gave details of what happened that November 15, 2017.
According to account Infobae, López stated that “when I had to sign the most painful message in my entire career which was the closure of the SAR case (for search and rescue) we had detected the position of the submarine and that is why we had coordinated with the British Navy on December 5 (2017) the order for an autonomous vehicle, because we knew that it could only be in two canyons, which was what we could not verify with all the required international means “.
The same media assures that “the Chilean scientific ship Cabo de Hornos detected through its sonars an object compatible with the ARA San Juan at a depth of more than 900 meters.” At that moment, Cesar Miranda, commander of the ship Cabo de Hornos, indicated that “Within the framework of the incessant work and the multiple contacts established, we made a discovery of an object at a depth of 940 meters through the echoes of the ship”.
However, that same day, Lópezz Mazzeo had assured the Argentine press that “there were no major news” regarding the location of the ARA San Juan.
Given this scenario, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Norberto Bellver said a few days ago that he will ask that the former President Mauricio Macri, the former defense minister Oscar Aguad and the then chief of the Navy Alfredo Srur are cited as defendants in the case.
