Last Friday, the statue was set on fire by unknown persons, while this Monday, when the 8M commemoration was taking place, subjects tried to tear it down, using combos, saws and ropes.
In the roundabout, in addition to the personnel who carried out the removal work, a large police contingent remained. When the operation began, a group of protesters was warned by the Carabineros that the curfew hours were in force. “The people gathered are reminded that they are on a curfew,” was heard over loudspeakers.
At 2.00 o’clock, a group of soldiers, at the sound of a trumpet, paid homage to the statue, as it began to be lifted by the crane and taken to a truck.
When the clock struck 2.33, the vehicle with the sculpture left escorted by the Carabineros.
The operation was carried out by the Council of National Monuments and a contractor company that provided the crane. The Army was in charge of moving her to your destination, that until yesterday would be the National Center for Conservation and Restoration.

During this Thursday, President Sebastián Piñera referred to the removal of the monument and pointed out that it will be replaced after its repair: “I want to say clearly and categorically that we as the government are going to replace the statue of General Baquedano in the Plaza Baquedano. First, as a recognition of the tremendous contribution General Baquedano made to winning the War of the Pacific. Second, because we want to express our appreciation and respect for our heroes, such as General Baquedano and for our history ”.
