This Saturday, the Metropolitan Region entered quarantine -only for the weekend-, after going to the Transition stage according to the government’s Step by Step plan.

In this context, the mayor of Santiago Centro, Felipe Alessandri, he regretted that this happened days before Christmas. “We are 12 days away from Christmas and this (Paseo Ahumada) would have been full of people, the Plaza de Armas, the Municipal (Theater) singing Christmas carols, an Easter tree, the family reunited. Today is Santiago destroyed“, he pointed.

In conversation with CHV News and CNN Chile, the communal chief said that to control the increase in cases that has affected the commune in recent weeks “it will depend on collective behavior.”.

“Today more than ever empathy is needed, putting ourselves in the place of the other, nobody wants to be confined. Santiago was one of the communes with the longest quarantine (143 days). For us it would be a tremendous punishment to go back“He added.

Likewise, the authority stated that “if we take care of each other, we will certainly advance to phase 3” and aimed, mainly, at the behavior of young people and the immigrant population residing in Santiago.

On the one hand, he argued that “Young people are the ones who have gathered the most in clandestine parties”, which was confirmed during audits carried out by the municipality.

As for the foreign community, he said that “Santiago is the commune of the country with the most immigrants and, sometimes, some with their behaviors promote xenophobia, I want to say it openly”.

Finally, Alessandri called on both groups to “abide by sanitary measures” announced by the authorities.
