Several people died on Tuesday after being hit by a car in the German city of Trier, an incident in which an undetermined number of wounded was also reported.

In total, 15 people have been injured, some of them “seriously”, according to the mayor of the city, Wolfram Leibe, who referred to a “crazy driver”, without yet specifying a number of deaths, although the police have spoken of “various”.

The victims were in a pedestrian zone, according to the police, urging the population to avoid the center of the city, where an important police device has been deployed.

A person has been arrested so far and the vehicle confiscated, but for now the police have not explained if it is an accident, an attack or an act committed by a disturbed person.

The vehicle in question would be an off-road vehicle, which would have broken into the main market of the city located in western Germany, near the border with Luxembourg.

This incident occurs in a tense context in Germany, where the Islamist threat is considered high, notes the Agence France-Presse.

In December 2016, a truck killed 12 people in Berlin. It was the bloodiest jihadist attack on German soil. According to figures from the Interior Ministry, since 2019, the authorities have aborted 17 attacks of this type that were in preparation.
