At least two people were killed – a civilian and the attacker – and a fortnight were injured in a series of attacks with firearms committed today at six points in the center of Vienna, as confirmed by the health services of the capital and the Police.

“We cannot yet establish a figure, we are still trying to get an overview”, has explained to the APA agency Daniel Mercher, of the emergency services.

Medical sources cited by public television cite at least fifteen injured, seven of them seriously.

One of the shootings occurred near a synagogue, which was closed when the attack began at around 20,000 local time.

The former tennis player and current Davis Cup captain, Nicolás Massú, confirmed that he is in the center of the city, adding that “they have us inside a restaurant waiting until we see when we can leave here.”

“Possible terrorist attack”

The Interior Ministry announced that the attackers killed a civilian and injured several people, including a policeman, and that some of the victims are in serious condition.

It has also been confirmed that one of the attackers was shot dead by security forces, and at least one other escaped.

The Austrian Government had confirmed minutes before that there are several injured and that possibly there would also be deaths, and called the attacks “apparent terrorist attacks.”

The health services have established an emergency point in the center of the city to treat the injured according to their severity, reports APA.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer assured that several people with long weapons had participated in the attack and asked the population to stay in their homes given that a large police device has been deployed to locate the attackers.

Regarding the identity and motivation of the attackers, the authorities have said that it is still early and that the situation is not yet clear.

One of the shootings took place on the street where one of the most important synagogues in Vienna is located, where in 1981 there was an attack that left two dead.

This street is part of one of the most popular nightlife areas in Vienna, and many people took advantage of the last open hours of the bars there before a curfew and a closure for a month came into effect from tonight.
