Seven years of investigations for illegal financing of politics leave only 23 convicted

The National Prosecutor’s Office published on Sunday a “Report of Investigations for Irregular Financing of the Policy”, which summarizes the procedural situation of the Penta, SQM, Corpesca and Asipes cases.

The 24-page document was prepared by the Public Ministry’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Unit and details the status of the cases up to September, as well as the situation of each accused and the penalties requested.

The count shows that seven years of investigations into illegal political financing (started in May 2013, with the Corpesca case; 16 months later the Penta case, more media was opened) have left only 23 people convicted, but none of them in an oral trial.

The vast majority of the defendants – more than 300 – have been dismissed, have availed themselves of conditional suspensions of the procedure or have fought because the Prosecutor’s Office has decided not to persevere in the accusations against them.

PENTA CASE

– Convicted in abbreviated procedure: Five, among them Jovino Novoa and Pablo Wagner, and the businessmen Carlos Délano and Carlos Lavín.
