“We must respect their right to vote”, Said this Tuesday the president of the Board of Directors of the Electoral Service, Patricio santamaria.

This in relation to the plebiscite of next October 25 and the protocol that should be followed if a person infected with Covid-19 is detected -in the polling station.

Santamaría, in conversation with Radio Concert, was asked how to proceed in these cases. “If such a situation occurs, the person does not know and it is established that he is Covid positive, the first thing to do is respect his right to vote, as established by law. Even people who commit crimes inside the premises have to vote before being detained ”.

After that, he explained, “The measures of the health authority will be taken“.

Seventeen days before the end of the term to apply to be an electoral facilitator of the constituent plebiscite, the Electoral Service he had to suspend -on Sunday the 13th at noon- this process. The reason? For the 15 thousand places that were sought to be completed, they received 166 thousand applications in less than two days.

It should be noted that this is a role that will be developed for the first time on October 25 and that, for the three-day performance, a payment of close to $ 70 thousand will be received. The objective of this position is, in the framework of the Covid-19 pandemic, to monitor compliance with sanitary measures in polling stations.

In conversation with Radio ADN, Santamaría highlighted this registration figure. “We had opened a term, until September 30, and at 36 hours we had 166 thousand people who were applying for this. We had to close that period and now we are in the selection phase of these facilitators “, he counted in the instance.

In this regard, he assured that this can be explained, in part, by the “interest that exists in young people to participate. You have to think that there is 120 thousand people who will turn 18 before October 25 “. However, on the other hand, “Nobody could rule out that the economic crisis (as a result of the pandemic), somehow had affected the high application we had.”

Santamaría also referred to the details of the sanitary protocol for these elections, after yesterday affirming that voting in the plebiscite “It will not be more dangerous than going to the supermarket.”

Along these lines, he reinforced that “We are prepared to receive the 15 million (from the electoral roll). We have established preferential hours (…) also an exclusive voting slot for the elderly”.

In addition to the measures aimed at ensuring that those who are going to pay do so in the safest possible way, “We are prioritizing the safety of table members”added.

“We have prioritized the safety of the vocals, they will have a high standard sanitary kit, which includes KN95 masks, they will have nitrile gloves, alcohol gel, face shieldsAt the same table, one of the members will be disinfecting, even every time the secret chamber is used it will have to be sanitized, ”he said.
