The senator of the PS, Juan Pablo Letelier, It showed itself “regretful” having voted for his colleague in the Senate, the independent Alejandro Guillier, in the presidential elections of 2017. This, following the proposal of the parliamentarian for Antofagasta to advance the elections and to put an end to the term of the President, Sebastián Piñera.
Although the proposal, which seeks to carry out both the parliamentary and presidential contests, has found support from sectors of the opposition – even a group of deputies presented a project in this line today -, it has also It has been criticized by other parliamentarians in the sector, especially from the DC and the PPD. In the Upper House, in addition to Letelier, senators such as Guido Girardi and Felipe Harboe, both PPDs, have also questioned her.
In conversation with Radio Duna, Letelier described as “Unacceptable” and “undemocratic” the approach made by Guillier and other parliamentarians in his sector.
“I believe in democracy. I do not agree at all what Guillier has said. I think that is contradicting himself. He was a presidential candidate, he was someone I voted for and it seems improper, if one believes in democracy, to question the terms of a government “, maintained the socialist.
The legislator added that “President Piñera was elected by a majority of the people who voted, today perhaps the majority does not want him, but part of the rules of the game that should not be questioned, in my opinion, is never the duration of a mandate such as that of the President. That of Senator Guillier seems unacceptable to me. For someone to propose to change the rules of the game in that way, it really seems to me that it is not only undemocratic, but it also seems to me that they are playing with fire “.
In this sense, and when asked if he regretted voting for him in 2017, Letelier left no doubts: “I feel sorry. If you want to ask me if I feel sorry: of course I feel sorry. How can it be … Because you place a lot of trust in a candidate when you support him. But suggesting to change the rules of the game seems to me to be of tremendous depth ”.
“I can have all the differences in the world with Piñera. It was the criticism I made of the right when they attacked President (Michelle) Bachelet and it was a devious situation of the same kind of tone that Guillier now wants to use against Piñera, than what certain sectors of the right were doing against former President Bachelet ”He added.
And concluded: “I feel that these sectors have little adherence to democratic rules, to the rule of law, to what is a recognition of things that should not happen again, which is to polarize things to be liked by some voices in society. With those attitudes I do not share and they bother me deeply.
