During this Thursday the Senate voted on the report of the Mixed commission on the bill that sought to lift the inability of different authorities to run for public office. The project was finally rejected for not reaching the required quorum of 3/5.
A minimum of 26 votes was needed, however only 25 were reached, there were 16 votes against and one abstention by Senator Yasna Provoste (DC).

The project sought to eliminate the inabilities of regional councilors, mayors, councilors and future governors so that they could run for Congress in November 2021.
Consequently, and after the rejection, the project was ended and there will be no law on this matter.
In this regard, the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Cristián Monckeberg, who regretted the result, referred, pointing out that the Upper House chose to protect the parliamentarians, avoid competition, and that the citizenship freely choose.
Meanwhile, the UDI senator, Claudio Alvarado – who chaired the Mixed commission that dispatched the report – also regretted that again there were no votes from his sector to approve an initiative that was sponsored by the Executive.
For his part, Deputy Jaime Tohá (PS) mentioned: “We welcome the decision of the Senate that has rejected a report from the Mixed Commission. Said report allowed that deputies and senators, disqualified to reappoint themselves, if they could do it to other positions of popular election, like councilmen, regional advisers, governors ”.
“With this decision I believe that justice is done to the vast majority of Chileans who ask for change and renewal in Chilean politics”, Held.
