During the afternoon of this Monday the Senate Chamber ratified Mario Carroza as the new minister of the Supreme Court. Let us remember that this was proposed by the Government on December 1.
In the instance there were 35 votes in favor, four against and two abstentions. Let us remember that Carroza needed 2/3 of the votes of the Chamber, that is, 29, which was finally achieved. The new minister will fill the vacancy left by former Supreme Court spokesman Lamberto Cisternas.
They voted against the senators José Miguel Durana (UDI), Iván Moreira (UDI), Kenneth Pugh (IND), Jacqueline van Rysselberghe (UDI). Meanwhile, Claudio Alvarado (UDI) and José García Ruminot (RN) abstained.
Carroza is a professor of Philosophy and a lawyer at the University of Chile. He entered the Judiciary in 1977, and since then, he has held various positions, including his work as judge of the second Puente Alto Court of First Instance in 1984; rapporteur of the Court of Appeals of San Miguel in 1987; judge of the First Criminal Court of Santiago in 1990; judge of the Sixth Civil Court of Santiago in 1992; judge of the Third Criminal Court of Santiago in 2000; prosecutor of the Santiago Appeals Court in 2002; and Minister of the Court of Appeals of Santiago, from 2007 to date. During his career, he has been visiting minister in various Human Rights causes.
Likewise, the minister has taught as professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedural Law at the School of Police; he has served as academic director and advisor of the Institute of Judicial Studies “Hernán Correa de la Cerda”; He fulfilled the role of president of the National Association of Magistrates between 2000 and 2002, and between 2006 and 2008; he has been a professor in various courses taught at the Judicial Academy; He has also worked as a monitor for Judicial Clinics, organized by the Law School of the University of Chile between 1990 and 2000.
