Seismological Center: The future earthquake will occur between Los Vilos and Pichilemu

As a result of the string of earthquakes in the north of the country, the director of the National Seismological Center, Sergio Barrientos, pointed out that there is another area that is accumulating energy long ago and that makes an earthquake foreseeable within the next few years: “Between Los Vilos and Pichilemu”.

Barrientos explained in The Cooperative Diary the seismic lagoons, a phenomenon that “corresponds to a place where one knows that earthquakes have occurred in the past and frequently in history it has been repeated several times and no major earthquakes have occurred in a long time.”

In addition, he pointed out that there is a convergence of 6.5 centimeters that accumulates each year through the Nazca Plate under the South American and that, over time, “get stuck and time passes and these centimeters each year continue to accumulate and released in a single earthquake every 100, 120, 150 years in a region. ”

“One could expect the equivalent to that displacement of the plates of several meters, in 100 years it corresponds to 6.5 meters, then each of those 6.5 meters corresponds to an earthquake of the order of 8 or higher,” he added.

At this point, he pointed out “there are certain places in Chile where no earthquakes have occurred in a long time, more than 100 years ago, that is why one classifies it as a seismic lagoon”, which would be the central area of the country.

“This area is also accumulating and the more time passes, the more energy will accumulate, but I would say that the place where the future earthquake is going to occur is limited, perhaps in more years, which is limited by Pichilemu to the south and Los Vilos to the north“, said.

Regarding the situation in the north, the expert indicated that there have been three major earthquakes in September, but that “they are too far apart to think that one has triggered the other, that are a consequence of the other “.
