The Superintendent of Pensions, Osvaldo Macías, pointed out this afternoon that if the second withdrawal of 10% of the AFPs takes place, more than 4 million people would be left without pension savings, equivalent to a third of the universe of contributors.
The highest authority of the Superintendency of Pensions (SP) attended the session of the Constitution Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies, invited in the midst of the analysis of the project presented by the opposition deputies Pamela Jiles (Humanist Party), René Saffirio (independent), Karim Bianchi (independent), Loreto Carvajal (PPD), Marisela Santibáñez (PC), Alexis Sepúlveda (PR) and Gabriel Silber (DC).
Macías warned that after the first withdrawal project of 10%, approved in July, “more than 1.9 million affiliates withdrew their entire balance, and 2.3 million more could do so if a second withdrawal is approved, which would leave more of 4.2 million affiliates with no balance in their accounts “.
This last figure represents “34% of the universe of people who could withdraw (all) their funds,” added the superintendent. According to Macías, the SP estimates that the first withdrawal “will imply a decrease in the pension of 13% on average for the affiliated to the system and a second retirement would imply a reduction of 23% of the average pensions “.
In line with what the Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, has pointed out regarding this new project, Macías stated that the priority should be “to advance the pension reform and reach an agreement that once and for all improves the pensions of both the people who are retired as well as those who are going to retire soon. “
“There is a national consensus that pensions are low and what we think is appropriate to do is design a good reform to once and for all give older adults a more dignified life,” he concluded.
