President Sebastián Piñera, in the middle of his participation in the 13th edition of the Atlantic Forum, addressed matters related to the protests that have developed in Chile since the social outbreak of October 18, 2019.
“A very radical left emerged, very populist, very little respectful of the rules of democracy, of the rules of the rule of law, which has raised things that in my opinion would be very negative for Chile,” said Piñera.
The president affirmed that “that left is not the path that Chile needs. The second danger is that the center-left has been too pressured and sometimes letting itself be carried away by this other extremist left. So far that left that does not have the votes, but often walks hand in hand with violence and hand in hand with populism and does not respect the basic values and principles of democracy, it has had a role in Chile that does not correspond to it. “
On the other hand, the head of state expressed his optimism with the progress of the constitutional process. “I have faith and confidence that, with adjustments, the Chilean model is not going to be thrown overboard, and that we will be able to agree on a new Constitution,” he said.
“Chile is not free or exempt from populism. Today we have a lot of populism in the country, people who promise success without work, but for that it is so important to understand that for there to be equity there must be progress,” he added.
