Sarah McBride became the first state senator on Tuesday openly transgender in the U.S.

The activist managed to defeat Republican Steve Washington in Delaware, according to National Public Radio.

McBride celebrated his election on Twitter saying that “I was hoping tonight would show an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too.”

“As Delaware continues to grapple with the Covid crisis, it is time to begin working on policies that will make a difference for working families,” he said.
