The night of September 18, 2017, While most of the country celebrated the National Holidays, a group of about seven people, with their faces covered, entered the cash transport company Esertval Ltda., located in Domingo Santa María 1846, commune of Independencia, and they took $ 15.8 billion.

It became the largest robbery in recent years, even dethroning the so-called “Robbery of the Century” of 2014, at the Santiago airport, for $ 6 billion, and the one that occurred in February of this year in the same place, where a group of criminals achieved a loot close to $ 13 billion.

More than three years after what happened, this Tuesday, in complete secrecy, Officials of the OS-9 of the Carabineros, following a judicial order from the magistrate of the Third Guarantee Court, María Fernanda Sierra, raided at least 20 homes nationwide and made a series of arrests.

Total, 13 people were arrested for the largest robbery in the country’s history. They are joined by others three who were already in prison for other crimes, after the millionaire robbery, whose cells were even raided.

All three are in preventive detention, two of them in Santiago 1 (Domingo Lilla Zamora and Samuel Aranis Muñoz) and the third in Santiago Sur (Eduardo Moya Rodriguez). The first two have been with this measure since June 18, for possession of weapons, and the last since September 28, for the same crime.

In addition, there are 13 other people who were apprehended this Tuesday, including two security guards. All the accused will pass this to control of detention in the Third Court of Guarantee of Santiago. Public defenders Alicia Corbalán, Belén Iribarren and Gonzalo García have already been notified of the detainees and are informed that they will have to take up the case.

According to sources linked to the investigation, those arrested accumulate a total of 100 cars and 37 high-value properties, in condominiums in Puente Alto and San Bernardo, among other communes.

In seizures, the uniformed police found bundles of bills still held by the detainees, as well as firearms.

A total of seven prosecutors from the North Central Prosecutor’s Office, led by the pursuer Marcelo Carrasco.

In the last days, the team of prosecutors was with personnel from OS-9 preparing the operation, which included tracking with drones, mobile surveillance equipment and social media monitoring, work done by the new Cybercrime team OS-9.

According to the same sources, the records of the purchases of the vehicles and properties were essential to support the evidence.

These arrests, and the arrests of Mónica Caballero and Francisco Solar, accused of the possible installation of bombs in Vitacura and in the Quiñenco building, against former Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter, are among the most connotative cases of the year, both in position of the OS-9.

The Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo DelgadoHe pointed out that “as the Chilean government we value the work of the Carabineros in conjunction with the North Central Prosecutor’s Office, through which it was possible to determine, after 20 raids, who were the persons responsible for the Robbery of the Century; we are talking about those who will have to answer to justice regarding this great robbery that occurred three years ago ”.

According to the background of the case, the robbery occurred after 11:30 p.m. on that September 18, when one of the two guards who guarded the vaults of the Esertval company went out to buy cigarettes from a nearby botillery, without his service weapon, “and in violation of all security protocols,” said the then head of the Santiago Oeste Zone at that time of Carabineros, General Andrés Gallegos.

Upon his return, the guard – according to his own account – was approached by a group of between six and seven hooded people with firearms, who intimidated him and forced him to open the doors of the place to enter.

Once inside, they allegedly reduced a second guard, handcuffing both of them and leaving them in one of the offices there.

Only three hours later the guards managed to free themselves and call Carabineros personnel, who arrived around 3.14 am the next day.

As reported that time, in that period, an undetermined group of subjects entered the company with ladders, grocery carts and tools, to steal only cash from the vaults, leaving behind the weapons of the guards.

It was also pointed out that they had been mobilized in at least four vehicles, including 4×4 off-road and sedan models, in black and white colors, which, according to some witnesses, were without their license plates.
