The survival strategy adopted by the National Renovation (RN) board of directors, including its general secretary, Felipe Cisternas, is filling the spirits across the board at Antonio Varas’ store. And although the members of the liberal wing are the ones who continue to give a floor to President and Senator Rafael Prohens, protecting him from the onslaught of dissent, who constantly criticize him in public and ask for the advancement of the elections, several of the former say that more and more the idea of holding it is dissolving.
“You can be pragmatic, but not everything in politics is contention, you can’t lead without ideas, you have to take definitions”, is heard more and more frequently in RN circles, especially after Sunday, October 29, when The community lost Vitacura, the most emblematic commune of the right, being left in the hands of the party that neither the UD nor RN would have ever thought of, Evópoli, with former minister Camila Merino, who defeated RN councilor Max Del Real and former UDI mayor Pablo Zalaquett .
But beyond the electoral results of the primaries, the dispute over the leadership of the community returns to focus attention on that store, which is divided like North Korea and South Korea, says a parliamentarian.
The last of the directive’s friction with the political commission occurred this Monday, when that instance was willing to make a statement regarding the unnecessaryness of agreeing with Republicans, by José Antonio Kast. On the occasion Rafael Prohens intervened, asking them to delay until Wednesday afternoon, since he was going to present a study that indicated that agreeing with JAK did not add or subtract. Finally, the study was not presented and, once again, the political commission was not convened, which raised the temperature to levels “rarely seen before,” say two members of the political commission.
But what would finally be overflowing the glass is what they describe as a “disastrous electoral strategy”, where although at the regional governor level they obtained five out of seven, scoring a victory, the same did not happen in the municipal governments. The most important, Vitacura and The Barnechea, are the great losses and will imply reinforcing a territorial deployment to those candidates for parliamentarians who will no longer have those mayors.
It was the same president of RN, in an interview with The counter, who pointed out that now the candidates called to maintain their quota must increase their presence in those territories. “They are going to have to make a greater effort,” he recommended.
Prohens also defended himself against the attacks of his adversaries, noting that “to criticize, first, one has to look at the navel.” Words addressed to one of his most staunch detractors, such as Deputy Diego Schalper, whom he accused of having succeeded only with one of his three candidates in the O’Higgins Region.
The deputy did not delay in answering him and pointed to The counter that “I am left with the words of Mayor Raúl Torrealba, who says that, rather than losing the candidate, he lost the party. I think that the electoral design of the municipal primaries was not correct ”.
He also dismissed Prohens’ statements regarding the defeat Schalper faced in his region. “I imagine that he is uninformed about the reality of O’Higgins, where, thanks to the work we have done, today the UDI is not the only party in the coalition that has strength, in an area where there used to be only one expression. We have powerful candidates in several communes and we won a primary where the candidate was always the UDI. Then, I imagine that he is uninformed ”.
Darts to the secretary general
Who has also captured the glances of the dissent in recent times is the secretary general, Felipe Cisternas, who they accused of having concentrated decision-making exclusively on his person, setting up a parallel body such as the electoral committee.
Cisternas, who accompanied Mario Desbordes when he was elected president of RN, would have taken refuge in the dissent, taking out welts in which they call themselves his “ex-allies”. The problem is that today, and like the position of the helmsman, he is in constant questioning on both sides, which would make it difficult for him to survive.

Desbordes, Sichel and the social right
Another issue, less than a year before the presidential, is who will finally be the candidate: Mario Desbordes or an independent like Sebastián Sichel, who has been scanning his attributes for some time now. While the president of RN says that “we cannot be so absurd as to ignore that Mario is the best positioned”, there are some in the dissent who do not rule out that the former DC and also former Citizens and current president of Banco Estado could become his representative .
Aware that the directive cannot continue in this guerrilla, President Rafael Prohens tried to lower the temperature of the internal dispute, offering to integrate the RN table to the current president of the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies, Diego Paulsen. But in this move – detractors and supporters of the table warn – an eventual consensus could be agreed underneath so that the internal elections are in March, and not in June as would be established to date, in such a way that it would fit well with “God and with the devil”, because the dissidence would yield its bet for December and three months would advance, as expected by the ruling party.
Return operation
The topic of the debate regarding the social right is another of the condiments that hasten the decision to leave the government of the current Minister of Defense, since a couple of months ago we have already been working on trying to differentiate the social right from Joaquín Lavín with that of National Renovation, personalized in Debordes.
They point out that, unlike the mayor’s, this would not be an individual project, without support from the rank and file. Rather, it would be a political initiative, born under the eaves of the former president of the store Cristián Monckeberg. To this they added that RN is not looking for a unity government, as the UDI candidate does, but rather is betting on a more global look and closer to the European social democracy, “very different” from the “lavinist” social democracy, they specify.
The problem is that without Mario Desbordes there is no one capable of filling that political space in RN, warn the overflowers, and point out that the field would have been given to unionism. “There are never empty spaces, they are always filled”, they point out and this is what Evelyn Matthei and Lavín are doing, taking over the media and installing the debate of the future of the right without anyone in RN capable of standing in their way. Since leaving Congress, after establishing himself as one of the sector’s leaders scoring in presidential polls, those who have worked for the return of Debordes have followed each of his steps in detail, noting all the possible potholes that could play in her against. The idea is to carry out the “Return Operation” in one month and, at the same time, lift his presidential candidacy. Among his supporters there is annoyance over the attitude assumed last Monday in the program “At this hour it is improvised”, when President Sebastián Piñera was consulted about the position of the Minister of Defense of not having the land of the Armed Forces. at La Reina and at the El Bosque air base to build social housing, he replied: “Well, Minister Desbordes is the Minister of Defense, and I am the President of all Chileans.”
That was read as a “removal of the floor” for the former RN member and provoked harsh reactions in different chats of adherents to Desbordes. But the setback with La Moneda did not end there, as the President announced on Thursday the extension of the state of catastrophe due to the coronavirus until March 13, which will imply that Chile will have been under that supreme decree for a whole year.
But coincidentally, weeks before, on the same show Channel 13Desbordes had anticipated that the state of emergency would end where necessary, so the presidential disavowal came to ratify the urgency of taking off the minister’s suit and landing at the headquarters of his party next January.
