Next week, on November 2, the Chamber of the Lower House will review and vote on the constitutional accusation of the opposition against the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez (UDI), and on the eve the parties begin to take accounts to know if there will be the votes so that the libel can advance to the Senate.
Although not binding, the commission to this of deputies voted to recommend the approval of the indictment, which consists of three chapters and questions the chief of staff for his role in the trucking strike and hierarchical control over the Carabineros.
In the framework of the review in that instance, Pérez’s lawyers pointed to the Ministry of Defense, headed today by the former deputy and former RN helmsman, Mario Desbordes, as head of control over the Carabineros during the state of catastrophe that has been in force since March in the country, several months before both took office in the respective ministries.
That seemed to refloat some tensions between the UDI and RN and the argument worried Desbordes, who dissociated himself from that interpretation, and in turn Pérez instructed his defense to desist from that defense formula so as “not to affect the unity of the center-right.”
At this point, close to the head of Defense in RN, such as deputy Paulina Núñez and her partner Camilo Morán -who replaced Desbordes as a deputy-, have said that this controversy is already settled. However, some party MPs say they are reflecting on their vote before the impeachment.
One of them is the deputy Jorge Durán, who also lashed out that “the position of his team (of Pérez) has been the worst of this government; shows little loyalty, a lack of leadership and is willing to do anything to save his own skin. “
“LET THE SHOW HAPPEN AND THE PEOPLE JUDGE”
Meanwhile, the UDI deputy Jorge Alessandri he attacked the opposition offensive, which he called a new “show” in the National Congress.
“The positions of the ministers are always at the disposal of the President, and his resignation is always on the desk, but I think that if Parliament wants to put on a show again, it is better for the President to let that show happen and for the public to judge “, Held.
This is also framed by calling to avoid the option that the Government has to remove Pérez to avoid the scenario that, if the accusation is successful in the Lower House, he will be suspended from his post until the Senate as a jury resolves his political guilt; in that eventuality, in the meantime he will be substituted by the current Juan Francisco Galli.
OPTIMISM IN THE OPPOSITION
For its part, in the opposition they see with optimism the eventual advance of the libel and they hope that deputies such as Loreto Carvajal (PPD), Pepe Auth, Fernando Meza or Daniel Verdessi (DC), who abstained in the failed accusation of former minister Jaime Mañalich, this time will support the text against Pérez.
In fact, yesterday, in a public gesture of unity, representatives of the opposition –from the Broad Front to the Christian Democracy– They promised to support the constitutional accusation against Pérez and assured that the votes are in place to ensure its approval in the Chamber.
“I have the impression that the weight of the arguments that support the accusation and the disorientation of the defense when responding to that accusation, have made that today the result a, my opinion, will be broadly favorable“, said the DC Gabriel Ascencio.
“There is an atmosphere of unity that is very important,” he stressed.
