The Metropolitan Region faces a complex moment as a result of covid-19. According to the last report, the cases add up to 20,353, which little by little has resulted in the healthcare facilities in the area beginning to become saturated.
As a result of this, it has become necessary for health authorities to determine the transfer of equipment from other areas of the country to the capital. Thus, the shipment of mechanical ventilators was ordered from the Biobío and La Araucanía regions, where the number of infections, according to what was stated by the undersecretary Arturo Zúñiga, have been decreasing and have low hospital occupancy.
“We are in full execution of our plan. We have the possibility of moving fans if necessary, moving patients and even health teams (…) We have considered it appropriate to move fans that are not being occupied,” said the Undersecretary of Assistance Networks, making it clear that the level of occupation in the whole country reaches 75%.
Although after meeting with the six health directors of the RM, he recognized that the situation is complex, since the infections have not stopped, he confirmed that 640 new beds will be enabled in the next two weeks, and he did not rule out the transfer of more equipment from other areas, provided they are not being used.
In the same sense, he recalled that it is possible to take patients who are cared for in Greater Santiago, Valparaíso or O’Higgins, “which are regions that have had few infections.”
“We are in a pandemic situation and that situation must be worked very intensively with the service directors so that the hospitals can relocate their beds,” he said.
“Ventilators have been moved from La Araucanía, Biobío to the Metropolitan Region, but we also have the capacity to transfer patients, if necessary.”
